Highlands House
Project: Extension and refurbishment of existing stone house
Location: Great Wilderness, Highlands, Scotland
Completion: May 2013
The setting for this interesting project is the remote north west coast of Scotland on the edge of the area known as the Great Wilderness. Dalton Muscat Architects were approached by the owner in 2010 to draw up plans to turn this humble traditional stone built crofters cottage into a contemporary styled spacious home whilst retaining the original walls as built by the owners’ forbears.
The project comprises the complete gutting and refurbishment of the existing stone house with an extension that virtually doubles the floorspace to add a highly contemporary kitchen/ dining area and garden room and utility with plenty of full height window features to let in sunlight and make the most of the panoramic views around the site. Together with extensive alterations to the surrounding external landscaping the result was a spectacular transformation into a very comfortable luxury home.
