Project: Passivhaus Apartments
Location: Cambridge
Cost: £0.5M
Contractor: Integrity Build
Completion: July 2016
This development is one of Cambridge’s first sustainable developments built to Passivhaus standards. The core focus of the Passivhaus design is to dramatically reduce the requirement for heating and cooling, whilst also creating excellent indoor air quality and comfort levels. This is achieved through a combination of high levels of insulation, high quality triple glazed windows and doors, exceptional air tightness levels combined with mechanical ventilation and heat recovery.
The development comprises two spacious two-bedroom apartments, one at ground floor and one at first, accessed via a common lobby. South facing open plan living / dining spaces ensure g efficient use of the sun. Combined with internal heat sources and heat recovery, conventional heating systems become unnecessary throughout even the coldest of winters. During warmer months, the generous roof overhang and the cantilevered glass balcony provide strategic shading to keep both apartments comfortably cool.
The overall result is a comfortable, healthy and above all affordable living environment.
